3 Ways to Instantly Infuse Your Day With More Energy
Really, do it now: Close your eyes and envision what you could accomplish and how wonderful you would feel with an extra dose of energy.
I’m so passionate about this topic that I’ve decided to turn this into a 3-week series. This week, we’re focusing on hacks to IMMEDIATELY increase your energy levels. Next week on the blog, we’ll go deeper and talk about energy from a more holistic perspective. And then the final week, I’ll discuss some specific yoga poses you can include into your day to help your energy levels.
Here we go! These are just a few simple tips to quickly get a big jolt and a great start to your day.
1. Sit Up Straight
Guess what? Your posture has a direct affect on your energy level! So sit up straight, shoulders back and down, and open your chest (or in yoga-speak, “open your heart). Don’t you immediately feel more energy?
The way you hold yourself will either GIVE you energy or make you feel tired. If you improve your body language, you’ll improve your energy level.
2. Breathing Techniques
Breathing techniques (Pranayama) move the “prana,” or life force, around in your body. Therefore, specific ways of breathing can make an instant shift in your energy.
Breathe deep and with awareness. Feel the sensations of the breath moving through your body. If you focus on extending the inhale longer than the exhale, you’ll notice an immediate increase in energy. Last week on the blog we talked about Kapabalahti breath, or “breath of fire.” This breathing technique is awesome for shaking up stagnant energy. Click here for the step-by-step tutorial on Breath of Fire.
3. Exercise for 4 minutes
Top performers in their industry and millionaires were asked what made the biggest difference in their performance. 70% said daily exercise.
The good news is that there’s no need to drag yourself to the gym for a long session. As little as four minutes will make a huge difference!
Four minutes of exercise will jumpstart your metabolism and give you a natural buzz. It will also make you feel accomplished, which will give you a great positive feeling and momentum that will immediately improve your mindset.
You can try a little interval training, jumping jacks, some sun salutations, or anything that lights you up.
Try my personal favorite four minute exercise: Silly dancing!
It’s become part of my morning routine to jump around and dance to a tune or two. You can do it anytime you need a boost throughout the day. It gets your heart rate going, your oxygen flowing, it’ll make you giggle, and music is such a powerful force in itself. Really let yourself be goofy (and don’t judge yourself! No one’s watching!)
All of That Said…A Caveat!
All of these tips are awesome for quick results, but THE most important thing in the long run is to get enough sleep! I know, I know. You’ve heard it a million times, and it’s easier said than done. But it’s so important.
I attempt to prioritize sleep over anything else (including exercise)! It’s the difference in feeling just so-so and mediocre versus high-energy and vibrant.
Tom Bilyeu (host of one of my favorite podcasts, Impact Theory) says “You need a certain amount of sleep, and if you don’t get it, your performance begins to decline — so much so that you can actually measure the decline on a test of cognitive ability. So, step number one, treat sleep like one of the most important things you’re going to do.”
