Benefits of Private Yoga Lessons

Are you interested in the benefits of yoga but feel hesitant or uncomfortable about joining a group class at a yoga studio? Have you ever considered private yoga?

First, let me say: Group yoga classes can be great. I first found yoga in a class I randomly stumbled into in NYC in my early 20s. Back then, I was into fitness, and I saw yoga as a means for more exercise. And once I started taking this class, I discovered yoga was much more than a way to get fit, and thus my 10+ year love affair with the practice began! 

But while group classes are wonderful for their own reasons, a private yoga class is a completely different story. Private lessons can bring about improvements to your mental and physical health and help achieve personal yoga goals. Working with a yoga teacher one-on-one can truly deepen your practice.

I’ve written about the many benefits of yoga before. But today, I want specifically address the benefits of PRIVATE yoga.

1. Highly Individualized

Instead of following along with the yoga instructor in a class setting, a private lesson allows you to set specific and personal goals. Whether you are new to yoga, dealing with an injury or physical limitation, lacking in confidence, or just wanting to work on take your practice deeper, private yoga lessons are designed specifically for you and your needs. 

We work on whatever you need most — whether that’s flexibility, stress relief, pose alignment, balance, meditation, muscle strength, back pain, etc. Feeling especially tight in your lower back and hips? Or perhaps you’re experiencing shoulder and neck discomfort? A teacher can customize a session that focuses on relaxing and lengthening the muscles in those trouble areas. 

2. Safety!

In group classes, the students vary in level of physical skill, from absolutely beginners to advanced yogis who can stand on their heads and wrap themselves in pretzels. Even when teachers are intent on creating a safe space, it’s very difficult (almost impossible, I’d say) to adapt the poses to all levels of skill. 

In a private session, we tailor the poses for your body specifically and keep an eye on any misalignments that could be cause for concern. If you have pre-existing medical conditions (anything from osteoporosis to sciatica to arthritis), then we can discuss which poses to avoid, as well as poses that will help alleviate your symptoms. 

3. At your convenience

Private sessions are flexible and can be worked around your social obligations and other conflicts.

It’s important to practice yoga regularly, and if your schedule doesn’t allow you to attend a specific regular group class, then you might want to consider private lessons. Instead of frantically rushing to a 6:00pm Vinyasa Flow studio class when you get of work at 5:45, you can book at private yoga session at 6:30pm that allows you plenty of time to change, grab a snack, and relax a bit.

4.  Connect with the teacher one-on-one

In a one-on-one session, you can ask as many questions as you like. I am there to answer and be as helpful as can be. My experience is at your command! My sole intention is to help you with your specific goals (whether those goals be mental or physical) and you get 100% of my focused attention, energy, and expertise. Because of this, you’ll experience positive shifts and breakthroughs far quicker than if you only practiced in a group class.

I strongly believe that you don’t need the coolest gear, the most expensive yoga outfit, or the trendiest new studio in order to practice yoga. You just need ONE person who shows up for you, who meets you where you are, and inspires you to continue to make positive shifts to your well-being. 

Finally, I’d like to reiterate/re-emphasize that group classes are also wonderful in their own right. The community aspect (and usually the price point) can’t be beat.
