Props Aren’t Cheating: A Friendly Rant
Aging asks us to pay closer attention to how we move… not to push harder, but to move smarter. And yet, so many people still approach yoga like it’s a test. Trying to reach the floor. Trying to “keep up.” Trying to do it without help. But when effort turns into strain, we lose the very thing yoga is meant to offer… support, awareness, and ease.
This post is adapted from Yoga for Longevity, my podcast where I share therapeutic yoga tools for healthy aging. I’m Mikah Horn, yoga therapist and founder of Lifelong Yoga Online, a membership designed especially for adults 50+. If you’re looking for a way to put the things you learn in this episode into practice, you can explore it free for 7 days, with gentle classes for joint health, healthy hips, posture, and more.
Props Help You Meet Your Body Where It Is
There’s a common belief that using props means you’re not “there yet.” That they’re something you should eventually grow out of. But this way of thinking often leads people to force their bodies into positions they’re not ready for… rounding the spine, gripping muscles, or holding the breath just to reach the floor.
Props shift that dynamic.
When you bring the floor closer with a block, or support your body with a blanket, your nervous system can settle. Your muscles can do their job without overcompensating. And your breath can stay steady.
Take low lunge as an example. Without support, many people collapse forward because the ground is simply too far away. Adding blocks under the hands creates space through the spine and chest… allowing the pose to actually do what it’s meant to do.
This is the essence of therapeutic yoga. You adapt the pose to your body… not the other way around.

Support Reduces Strain and Improves Stability
Props don’t just make things easier… they make your practice more effective.
When your body feels unstable or unsupported, your nervous system shifts into protection mode. You may not notice it, but you start gripping, compensating, or bracing. Over time, that can lead to discomfort or even injury.
Simple additions can make a big difference.
A folded blanket under the knees in tabletop reduces pressure on the joints and removes a distraction. A bolster under the knees in rest can ease tension in the low back and help the spine settle more naturally.
These small adjustments allow your body to relax into the practice instead of fighting against it.
And when the body feels safe… it’s much more willing to open, strengthen, and adapt.

Props Can Also Add Challenge and Refinement
Props aren’t only for support. They’re also powerful tools for building strength, awareness, and control.
A block between the thighs can activate the inner legs and help organize the pelvis in poses like bridge or chair. A block between the ankles can improve stability and balance… especially when combined with movements like heel lifts or controlled squats.
Even a simple yoga strap can deepen your awareness. It’s not just for stretching. Shoulder mobility exercises like “shoulder flossing” can help improve range of motion… when done slowly and with intention.
And for posture, placing a blanket or block under the upper back in supported fish can gently open the chest and counteract the effects of daily slouching.
These aren’t shortcuts. They’re refinements.
Even experienced practitioners use props regularly… not because they need them, but because they understand how valuable they are.

Bringing It All Together
Props aren’t something you graduate out of. They’re something you grow with.
They create space where there is restriction… support where there is strain… and challenge where there is readiness. Most importantly, they help you practice in a way that respects your body… exactly as it is today.
If this is a shift for you, start small. Try one prop in your next practice and notice how it changes the experience.
