Move Gently, Move Often: The Joint-Freeing Sequence
You might’ve heard the saying “motion is lotion.”
It’s true. When we move our joints through their natural range (especially in gentle, intentional ways), we help nourish the tissues, keep things gliding smoothly, and maintain the kind of mobility that makes everyday life easier.
That’s the spirit behind this week’s yoga video.
We’re exploring a variation of the Joint-Freeing Sequence, a beautifully simple and intentional set of movements originally developed by the late Mukunda Stiles, a yoga therapist and teacher who made a lasting impact in the world of therapeutic yoga. His work was all about making yoga accessible, nourishing, and effective.
This sequence is also sometimes called Pawanmuktasana Series 1 (or “The Joint-Freeing Series”). It’s 24 minutes of gentle, rhythmic movements designed to wake up the joints, increase circulation, and bring a sense of ease back into your body.
It’s the kind of practice that doesn’t look like much at first glance, but once you try it, you’ll feel the difference.
Why joint-freeing movement matters
Let’s be honest…our joints don’t always get the attention they deserve.
We stretch our muscles. We might work on balance or strength. But our joints? They’re the unsung heroes of healthy movement. And when they’re stiff or achy, everything feels harder. Getting up from a chair. Reaching overhead. Walking with confidence.
When your joints move better, everything moves better!

This kind of gentle, joint-focused movement helps by:
- Circulating synovial fluid to keep joints hydrated and nourished
- Supporting the health of cartilage and surrounding tissues
- Easing stiffness in a gentle, non-invasive way
- Improving proprioception (your brain’s awareness of where your body is in space)
- Calming your nervous system

Joint-freeing movement is one of the most accessible ways to maintain mobility (and one of the most overlooked).
What we’re focusing on this week
If you’re following along inside my membership for Summer of Longevity, this first week’s theme is Mobility & Movement Variety. And this sequence fits right in.
We’re exploring how simple shifts (like moving our joints through their full range, or practicing patterns we haven’t used in a while) can unlock a surprising amount of freedom in the body.
Because the more ways we move, the more options our body keeps. And that’s what helps us age with confidence. Whether it’s getting down on the floor to play with your grandkid or reaching for something on a high shelf without hesitation, mobility gives us choices. It makes life feel more spacious.
‘Motion is lotion’ isn’t just a catchy phrase. It reflects what we know about how joints stay healthy: regular, intentional movement.

Whether you’re joining us inside the membership or following along on YouTube, I hope you’ll give this sequence a try. It’s a beautiful way to start (or end) the day with intention.
Curious about the full Summer of Longevity series? You can still jump in and join us. Read more about it here. We’d love to have you along for the journey.
